Daily advice for HK immigrants to the West:
Regarding race, one way to open your mind is to try different kinds of food. Try to eat food you’re not used to. Try out different kinds of Indian, Caribbean, African American etc. foods, and learn to cook with their sauces and methods. If you’re the reading type, study the history of their foods. For example, my experience tells me that the best sources of fried chicken come from African Americans, Indian or Caribbean cuisine. You can only try different kinds of food, if you have real friends from those groups. Go to cultural events of other races to learn. Don't go to the default “I think my people’s food is the best” mode. Keep your mind open. Get involved in school where parents from different cultures get together to support your child’s team or academic activities. Visit museums to understand the rich history of other races. Converse humbly with friends from other cultures, and let them teach you. Encourage your children to read widely beyond the canon of Western literature (Of course, the canon of Western lit is important too). When they learn a foreign language in school, don’t think in terms of usefulness but in terms of exposing them to a wider culture. Better yet, learn along with them when they do their homework. This is the only way to build your multicultural point of view.

💞Some say that “only when you have your own children can you truly understand the love of your parents.” My Japanese mother and American father made many sacrifices for me and my two sisters that I never fully appreciated until I had my own child. When we left Japan, we were confused by California but felt desperate to fit in at our new school. My mother made beautiful bento boxes for our lunches, but we begged her for peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches because kids called us “weird.” My mother understood and put aside her own cultural preferences. We started eating cold cereal instead of miso soup for breakfast, and yes – peanut butter for lunch.
But she always told us that what other people called “weird” is what made us so special: that we benefited from two cultures; that we could speak two languages; that we had seen more of the world as children than many people see in their whole lives. When kids were unkind to us or made fun of my mother’s accent, she told us that they did it because they were afraid, or ignorant. Fear of new things, she said, was natural. But ignorance was unacceptable-it was a condition each person had the power to cure through learning. My father was born in the U.S. but sometimes felt like a stranger. He joined the U.S. Navy at a young age to seek adventure and escape the limits of small-town thinking. When I held my own daughter in my arms on the day I adopted her, I was happy that we now live in a world where foreign accents are interesting and bento boxes are cool. But I know she faces her own, different challenges as an Asian girl growing up in a confusing world. I want to protect her from everything. But I know the best thing I can do for her is to live a life that welcomes adventure and rejects ignorance. -- AIT Public Diplomacy Section Chief Diane Sovereign

A little tidbit of life's lesson that I've picked up along the way 🌸
Pre-Covid, I had the opportunity to travel the world and immerse in different cultures, learning their way of life. What stands in common between all is how to be a human being. It was most striking during my visit to Bhutan and India. They seemed to have unlocked the way of life, putting themselves above basic human nature and understanding how to live as a wholesome sentient being.
From them, I learnt that we can't control how others treat us, it is their karma. However, we can control how we react. Read this sentence again and let it transform your life. In life, you'll meet all kinds of people who's actions are a reflection of themselves, but your actions are a reflection of yourself. The ultimate goal is to be at peace with oneself, as we transcend into our higher being. The rest are just distractions, or simply said, a passing car on the road.
My heart goes out to all our Asian American friends, people in Myanmar and whoever else who's faced injustice from the action of another. Forgive the perpetrators, let yourself have the peace you deserve. Be safe, and let's help to educate the world that violence & discrimination is never a solution. There is no one true superior, we are all just human beings bidding our time on Earth. ❤️

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry is scheduled to visit Taiwan on Sept. 6, Washington-based sportswear maker Under Armour said.
It will be Curry’s first trip to Taiwan, which will be the final stop on a five-day tour of Asia. The Golden State Warriors point guard is also to visit Hong Kong and China’s Shengyang and Guangzhou.
Curry is to coach some of the nation’s top high-school basketball point guards attending an Under Armour Basketball Summer Camp, the company said.
Players would learn from Curry’s demonstration of advanced basketball skills and his experience as a professional basketball player, the sponsor said.
Curry was quoted in a statement issued by Under Armour as saying that he is looking forward to visiting his fans this summer.
He said that he would be able to share his passion about basketball with young players in Asia, and he also looked forward to seeing how passionate people are about basketball in different cultures.
Such experiences would empower him to meet the challenges of the upcoming basketball season, he said.
Apart from Curry, three other NBA players have visited Taiwan this summer.
Taiwanese-American player Jeremy Lin (林書豪) visited in June to coach a basketball camp and meet his fans.
Former Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kobe Bryant also arrived in June following his retirement from the professional game.
Kevin Durant visited the nation in the middle of last month after he announced he would be joining the Golden State Warriors.
